On a Day When I Was Thanking God for Good Friends, Good Therapists, and Lexapro
Darkness
Would you sit with me for a while
In the darkness
At the bottom of this pit
I’ve stopped to catch my breath
Reassess
Find a way out of it
Someone dropped a ladder
That I cannot seem to find
I know there’s a candle here somewhere
If only I could make it catch light
Many directions have been given
With love - to be sure
But when you’re on alien ground
It all starts to blur
East and west
Ceiling and floor
There is no easy escape
Someone told me to pray my way out
But my pleas all sound the same
God help me
God help me
God take away this madness
Or maybe God could give me a new brain
One without the trauma and the penchant for sadness
This darkness starts to twist your thoughts
The longer you face it alone
Maybe they’re better without me
Maybe it’d be nice to be gone
But with you here
Pulling up a chair
Saving space and listening close
It suddenly doesn’t feel so bad
My chest is a little loose
Look to the right
There’s a tunnel there
The sun’s a little brighter
I can see again
The fog starts to clear
.My whole body feels lighter
You say you didn’t do that much
You only sat and listened
But being with me in the dark
Has made all the difference
